If We're Damned...

markvagabond Outstanding EP knocked together from odds and ends from the hard drive and brilliant mind of the hardest working human in all of live stream entertainment. So committed to entertaining her ever swelling fan base you can buy her discography in the morning and she's released a new single by dinner time. Yes, that did really happen. Prolific without the quality suffering one jot. Incredible folk songs for any fan of the genre or perhaps somebody looking for some guidance in how not to be a twat.

We're back here again and I thought this time it'd passed But it's always darkest before the dawn and I am holding on to that We got it wrong and it seems that they're getting more right And as the storm clouds all creep in it's getting hard to see the light But there is hope and we've got enough to go around There's a light that in the darkness can be found There's a flame; a beacon that's not going out There's a cause And if we're damned we'll all go down together We'll keep up the fight through the dark and stormy weather 'Cause that's all we've got; we'll hold on to each other And we will mend We'll get there in the end The next act begins as the actors take to the floor Whether a pantomime or a tragedy the crowd still calls for more The curtains rise and it seems like everything's changed But it's just a little bleaker now; the cause remains the same But there is hope and we've got enough to go around There's a light that in the darkness can be found There's a flame; a beacon that's not going out There's a cause Yeah, we've something left to fight for And if we're damned we'll all go down together We'll keep up the fight through the dark and stormy weather 'Cause that's all we've got; we'll hold on to each other And we will mend We'll get there in the end To the people sleeping rough tonight Out underneath the cold street lights And the one's who sing their kids to sleep Who starve themselves so they might eat To the people who've been left behind And the ones we've lost to suicide To those who don't know what to do Listen up; this one's for you To everyone who fought so hard Now black and blue and battle scarred To those who thought that we'd give up We won't sit down we won't shut up To those who stood and had their say Who live to fight another day Hats off to you the bold the brave All I can say Is if we're damned we'll all go down together We'll keep up the fight through the dark and stormy weather 'Cause that's all we've got; we'll hold on to each other And we will mend And if we're damned we'll all go down together We'll keep up the fight through the dark and stormy weather 'Cause that's all we've got; we'll hold on to each other And we will mend We'll get there in the end

Lights are pulsing blue and I have lost my train of thought Keep catching glimpses of you running through these corridors Show me the way to make my escape The clouds are glowing red and I’m not sure that this is real There is a beating in my chest that I am unable to feel Show me the way guide me through the gates ‘Cause I was so sure that I was right and you were wrong And we could hear it in our song Yeah, we knew it all along And now we’re lost upon the sea Adrift here you and me On all our scattered dreams Now we’re lost upon the sea The stars are full of light and yet I still don’t know the truth I have been so sure all my life and now I don’t know what to do Show me the way ‘cause I am so afraid And I was so sure that I would always know the way And live to fight another day No matter what the games we play And now we’re lost upon the sea Adrift here you and me On all our scattered dreams Now we’re lost upon the sea And now we’re lost upon the sea Adrift here you and me On all our scattered dreams Now we’re lost upon the sea

How would your heart weigh against a feather? Would it balance the scales? Will you be getting into your heaven? Where do you stand when all else fails? Because it’s looking dark from here Yeas, it’s looking dark from here Where does your compass guide you? Does it’s needle still point north? Will you do just what they tell you? Are you going to stay the course? Because it’s looking dark from here Yes, it’s looking dark from here And there you stand where the ocean meets the sand And there you stand at the edge And there you stand where the ocean meets the sand And there you stand once again

Well, he’s lingered here too long, heard another song Start without a moments delay And the picture on the screen’s hardly what it seems Just another game for him to play And the coffee that’s running through his veins We’ll it keeps him awake Back when he was young his dad owned a gun That was always hanging on the wall He’d get into fights nowhere left to hide Bloody face but still standing tall Now for thirty odd years he’s been Neatly avoiding the call To his fathers old shop With the Winchester gun on the wall Now his basement smells like bourbon and a half finished boat And his friends can’t get to seeing how it’ll ever float ‘Cause the can’t break the bottle No they can’t break the bottle There’s a photograph he keeps; sitting in a drawer He’d give anything to be there now; anything at all ‘Cause it can’t be forgotten No they can’t be forgotten When he turned eighteen he joined the marines Caught a train and left it all behind He got married to a girl, she became his world Stayed at home when he went off to fight And for a while he was content With his life Now he’s up before the sun carrying a gun He once almost turned on himself He can’t leave it in the passed; happened much too fast Never got to say his farewells And now when he drinks he drinks from jars That held nails on the shelf As he works on his own and he builds an escape For himself Now his basement smells like bourbon and a half finished boat And his friends can’t get to seeing how it’ll ever float ‘Cause the can’t break the bottle No they can’t break the bottle There’s a photo of his family sitting in a drawer He’d give anything to be there now; anything at all ‘Cause they can’t be forgotten No they can’t be forgotten On the day his daughter was born He was half the world away And when someone took a shot, crashed the car Well, he wished that he has stayed And on the day of their funeral His dad bought a date Never stopped to ask him if he was okay Well, he wasn’t that day He got married three more times and none of his wives Stayed long enough to call his house a home Now he takes the sofa when he sleeps; just can’t face the dreams When he’s forced to wake in bed alone

There’s a fight down at the bar They’re all hurling words and swearing at the police cars There’s a fight out in the fields With all the yapping dogs biting at their heels Well, which way will we go when the fight is done? Which way will we go and where will we run? Here them marching down the street From left to right hear the stamping of their feet now Hear them marching down the road From right to left they’re all marching for their own Well, which way will we go when the fight is done? Which way will we go and where will we run? I’ll take your shoes, you take mine We’ll march together side by side And decide which way we will go We’re just people you and I Our lives dictated by the rolling of the dice We’re just people me and you They flip the coin; heads they win, tails we lose Where are we running to? Where are we running to? You know I don’t believe in fate We’re all a product of the times and where we’re placed here I know you don’t believe in god So stop pretending to be something that you’re not Well, which way will we go when the fight is done? Which way will we go and where will we run? I’ll take your shoes, you take mine We’ll march together side by side And decide which way we will go We’re just people you and I Our lives dictated by the rolling of the dice We’re just people me and you They flip the coin; heads they win, tails we lose Where are we running to? Where are we running to? We’ve got a choice to make the world a better place If we could just meet on the thin side of the coin And we could find some middle ground And not just shout above the sound We’re just people you and I Our lives dictated by the rolling of the dice We’re just people me and you They flip the coin; heads they win, tails we lose Where are we running to? Where are we running to?

Well, there’s a girl so young she wonders what she’s done to make her daddy move away And she cries every night; she’s always wondering why he couldn’t have stayed And her mother won’t tell her about the war on terror that her daddy’s off fighting to end ‘Cause she knows they’re just digging their trenches once again And as that girl grows up she seems to always be stuck in an endless, bloody war Now she’s questioning why her daddy had to die like so many had before And when she turns on the TV she doesn’t want to see all the politicians shifting the blame But she knows it’s always been that way As she takes a look at their London stage she sees a guy in a suit reading off of a page He says “I’m sorry but there’s no way we’re getting out of there alive” And he stammers and starts, shouting over the din. He says “It’s not my fault; you people voted me in” Well, with a vision like that it’s a miracle we survive There’s a boy of sixteen and all the things that he’s seen haunt his nightmares when he sleeps And though he’s stuck in a cell it’s better than the Hell of sleeping out there on the streets “I know stealing isn’t funny but I needed the money,” he said, when he was asked by the police “I know I’m young but I still have to eat” If they'd take a walk along that dusty road they'd see that kid with no home he’s trying to sell his soul to a man as he explains “there’s no one getting out alive.” He says, “Well, listen to me son, and you better obey, you’ve gotta carry this gun if you wanna get paid. And be the first to pull the trigger; it’s the only way you’re gonna survive” La da da la da da Well, I haven’t heard that voice on the wind that seems to be telling everybody which way to go and I haven't had a vision appear so I guess I’ll just go it alone I don’t believe that I can blame this on a supernatural entity that’s sitting on a cloud somewhere manipulating you and me We’re all to capable of screwing it up on our own Well, I take a walk along that busy street; I see a guy with a book and he’s yelling at me He says, “There’s just no way that you’re getting out of here alive. So you better follow me blindly wherever you walk and never break the rules in this little, bound book And if you're anything but my ideal, I’m sorry but you won't survive” La da da la da da

about

Jess Silk Dudley, UK

Jess Silk is a guitarist, singer and songwriter from the Black Country. Her shouty but melodic brand of folk/punk music often has her being likened to a female Frank Turner or Billy Bragg, and it gets people sitting up and listening. Armed only with an increasingly sticker-covered acoustic guitar and a distinctive, gravely voice that many don’t expect, Jess plays to audiences up and down the UK. ... more
